Cornflowers are one of my favourite flowers. He blue ones particularly so. This one was growing in  my garden and so naturally enough, I shot it, erm with my camera of course. I don’t own a gun and if I did, I am reasonably certain I would not use it to go around shooting flowers, or anything actually. Maybe a target at the gun club but that is all.  Anyway, having looked at the photograph of this cornflower I thought to myself, I need to do something with this. But what?

I was over at my sister’s house a few days later and taking photographs of family, nothing important, not portraits or anything grand I was just there with my camera shooting normal family shots as we were having a barbeque I was recall. We always used to have barbeques at my sister’s house, then two years ago she bought me a barbeque for my birthday, not we always have them at mine!

Well, once I had taken the usual boring photographs of people stuffing their faces with burnt burgers and sausages etc. none of which I have kept by the way,  I noticed the wall at the back of her house. The bricks were different from her previous home, she had moved recently, and I used the bricks in her previous home in another photograph, Sea Wall, but these bricks had a pattern and I so could not resist photographing them.

A few days later when I was going through the shots of that day, I came across the brick photos and it dawned on me that this was what I needed for that cornflower photo. After some playing around, I came up with Brick Cornflower, and I have to say that I like it very much. It mixes nature with industry and urban spread. I can imagine that one day nature will take on the patterns of man-made objects in order to camouflage them and cornflowers looking just like this one will grow on derelict building sites amongst the fallen bricks and joists. Still standing out their beautiful colours but attempting to blend in with their camouflaged petal patterns. A confused nature in a confused world.

Brick Cornflower is available in the on-line shop in various sizes.
