St. George’s Church, Ramsgate, UK. 18″ x 12″
This is an image made from a photograph that I took from the balcony of the flat that I had at that time. It was in a high-rise block and the fire alarm went off about 3 nights a week. It seemed the local youths liked watching the fire brigade race through the streets to the building. No one ever left their flats after their first experience of this, so if there ever was a real fire we would have all burnt to death no doubt. The first time this happened to me, on my very first night there, the fire alarms went off so loudly and I jumped so high, I thought I was going to stick to the ceiling by my fingernails! I ran around the flat like a mad naked thing, looking for something on fire. There was nothing, all was well. I looked through the peep hole in the front door to see if the neighbours were evacuating. No one was moving. I went out on to the balcony and the fire bridge arrived, after a few minutes all the alarms were off. The next morning my new neighbour told me to expect it all the time. He was right, but that first night as I ran around my flat I thought, ‘Gosh, I have only just moved in and have caused the alarms to go off’. I do not live there anymore, I was only there a year at most. But not long afterwards there was a terrible fire in a tower block in London, Grenfell Tower, in which many, many people lost their lives and homes. If such a fire happened in that tower block in Ramsgate, I would have simply turned over in my bed and gone back to sleep as would the entire block. Clearly, we would have all died, thanks to the pranksters that think it amusing to set off fire alarms and cause our amazing fire and rescue people to waste their time and resources and putting people’s lives at risk.
As you can see I have photoshopped this image and played around with he colours, shades and tones to create an image of the church that I am pleased with and represents it very well. The church is one of Ramsgate’s hidden gems as it is hidden away down a small lane off the high street and you could easily walk past without noticing it. Definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Ramsgate, UK.
